Common Ground
Last Monday we all looked pretty ridiculous, didn't we? Across state lines, religious lines, racial lines, social lines, and generational lines, we all looked pretty much the same. Wearing silly paper glasses with our heads tilted upwards towards the sky. As important and exciting as this event was in scientific terms, it was just as important, I think, for the state of our country right now. For a nanosecond in our lifetimes, we came together without thought to our differences. For a brief second, we anticipated the darkness without any fear. We welcomed it together. It was awe inspiring. For some it was a religious or spiritual experience. We held our breaths communally and then gasped in wonder our life force into the world. How ironic that the total solar eclipse's path literally sliced this country into halves. It divided the country, yet brought it together. It was an eclipse of the sun, but it also eclipsed our worry, hatred, division.
Let this be a reminder, my friends, that we all walk the same path, the same way, the same earth... and we all look to the same heavens. Have a wonderful, blessed week.
