A Monarch's Royal Duties

The Monarchs that you see this time of year are special in this royal group of butterflies. While their  family members from early on in the season have had a short lifespan, this last group that appears in late summer/early fall are the elite members that travel far south and over the winter months will continue to live eight months in preparation to travel back north in the spring. It is a wonder of nature that these fragile appearing creatures can endure this long and treacherous trek southward only to return to us again in the spring to start a whole new generation of butterfly majesty.
